WALTON A. CARTER, JR.

April 12, 2024

Walton A. Carter Jr. 87 went to be with the Lord on April 9th, 2024.

He was born in Norton, VA on Christmas Day of 1937 to Walton A. Carter Sr. and Minnie Fay Carter. He moved to Anderson in 1956 to attend Anderson College. It was there that he met the love of his life, Ruth Halliburton, whom he married in 1959. Walton taught middle school English and Geography for 30+ years. He loved his students and quality education. Walton was very active in his church and used his God-given talents to touch the lives of many. He went to Costa Rica on a mission trip, started a Wednesday night meal program, and sang in the choir at South Meridian Church of God. Walton was a professional painter during the summer months. Those he painted for did not simply employ him but became his friends. He loved nature walks, playing with the family dogs, and birdwatching. He and Ruth immensely enjoyed growing and harvesting vegetables and berries. Walt was a loving and nurturing husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.

He is survived by his wife Ruth of 64 years, daughters Teresa Miller and Kathleen Atkins, grandchildren Kinsley Elsten (Josh), Abigail McDowell (Tyler), and Quinn Miller as well as his great-grandchildren Irelann and Walker McDowell. He is also survived by his sister Margaret Fleming of Abingdon, VA.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Carl, Glenn, and CJ, and sisters Bess Busberg and Ruth Smith.

The family asks that any memorial donations be made to the Alzheimer's Foundation of America.
